The bees are tucked away in their double layer of warmth.  The of the insulation box top doesn't fit on the bottom because it was designed for the proper winter set-up. The hive box inside is are meant to have a short shim with some solid food (fondant) not a taller, full box with bottles of sugar water.  However, since the bees don't have enough honey food stores for winter, I'm giving them both liquid and solid food; and they prefer the liquid.

The weather has been mild enough that they can still drink the sugar water. Bee school says that when the liquid gets below 50 degrees, it's too cold for them. But, because bees are amazing, they can slightly warm the water.  Every time I have peeked in, they're drinking the liquid and ignoring the fondant. So, this is the plan until we get a cold snap, in which case I'll remove the liquid food so the height of the hive box is shorter and the outside box fits.
